How are you?
I wanted to pitch an idea for a story in American Baby. I created a charity called Olam and I'm currently selling T-shirts and giving 20% of the profit to the OC Walk to Remember, a charity dedicated to those that have lost a child in pregnancy or infancy. At this moment the shirts are sold at the Katin Surf Shop, Harbour Surfboards and Online at www.theolamproject.com
Below is the story of how I got here and what I plan to accomplish. Let me know if you would be willing to write about my story. I know a little help from American Baby would go a long way. Thanks
The story of Olam is a story of loss.
Founder Mike Vavak dreamed of being a father since he was 15 years old. He told his then girlfriend, now wife, Shimrit that their first child would be a boy and his name would be Milo David Vavak. On Feb 11, 2009, that dream became a reality which quickly turned into a tragedy. Milo was born still.
Shimrit suggested that they go to a support group to help them through the long journey known as the grieving process. With new friends and knowledge they took each step, day by day, until they learned to live again.
Mike and Shimrit never lost the dream of being parents and on July 5th, 2010, their beautiful son Shaiah Olim Vavak was born. In honor of Milo, Shaiahs middle name is Milo backwards. Shaiah also has a Hebrew name which is Shaiah Olam. The English translation of the Hebrew word Olam is World.
There is a saying in Hebrew, Tikkun Olam, which means Repairing the World. Many people helped Mike repair his world and now he wants to do his part in repairing other peoples worlds. To that end, Mike created a non-profit agency, Olam, to honor his family, because his family is his world.
The goal of Olam is to give back. We will raise money and goods for charities that pull on our hearts. We plan to do this by selling T-shirts and donating a good portion of the profit to different charities and organizations.
Please check out the Products section of the website to see the T-shirts and which charity will benefit from each purchase.
