I am pregnant with my very first baby and one thing I am confused about is bathing and wiping a newborn. I have been told many diferent things. For example, my mother and a friend of mine say it's ok to bathe the baby with baby soap and clean baby with wipes. I have also heard that a newborn is too sensitive and should not be bathed with soap only water and to clean the baby with a cotton pad and water instead of baby wipes.
It is confusing! You cannot bathe a baby in water until the belly button falls off. Until then, sponge baths will have to do. After the belly button falls off bathe baby in an age-appropriate baby tub using warm water and baby soap two to three times a week.
When giving sponge baths you can use baby soap. Becareful not to saturate the umbilical cord. I cleaned that last and dried it right away. You can use baby wipes, I was unsure at first also and asked the pediatrician. She told me to use unscented baby wipes in the beginning. I have tried scented now, my daughters 3 weeks, and the scented seems to bother her, so I would definitely hold off on them.
my daughter is 10 weeks and her pediatrician said it was ok for her to have a regular bath every other day even before her cord stump fell off we never had any problems with it
