Hello Everyone, I am 33 weeks along with my first child, and can't help but feel like I'm in the dark about Labor Delivery. Especially because I am being cared for at a high risk hospital, I've had type 1 diabetes for 13 years and circumvallate placenta ( where the placenta cord runs lower on one end which could cause growth restriction). My doctor's haven't mentioned anything about how to register or even asked if I had a preference for the delivery. The last visit I had was rushed and I was politely asked to write down any questions I had for the next appt which isn't until July 5th. Shouldn't I have been given instructions on how to register online or even a set of papers with my medical history in case I have to be rushed to a different hospital, or am I jumping the gun? I rather be prepared to the best of my ability because you just never know when they decide to come into the world :)....thanks~

By you having complications and being 33 weeks, I don't understand why they haven't already given you that information. I'm sure you should be able to call the office and ask anyone on the staff there about having or needing this infomation. Mine came in the packet they gave me the same day that I found out I was pregnant along w/ instructions on when to turn the forms in etc....

You may be able to register online, I was able to with this pregnancy. Go to your hospital's website. Somewhere in the "patients" area there may be a link that says something to the effect of "Preregister for a procedure or surgery". That should take you to the registration form. If you can't find anything, go to the registration desk in the hospital and tell them you would like to preregister for having the baby there. The receptionist should give you all the paperwork that you need to fill out. Be sure to bring your insurance card! Given your history, it may be a good idea for you to put together a document describing your conditions and any treatments that you are receiving for them. Also include your doctors' names and phone numbers. Keep this with you from now until you give birth, so in case you do have an emergency and need to be rushed to a different hospital, they have all the information there in one spot and can treat you appropriately. It is unfortunate that you haven't received a lot of guidance from your OB, but sometimes you have to be your own advocate to get the info you need/want. Hope that helps! Good luck!

Like Chera I was given a packet the day I found out I was preggo with pre-registration forms for the hospital. Like you I am also high risk, 33 wks, and have not been asked any of the birth plan questions. I am kinda on weekly appointments though. I see my OB one week and my high risk OB the next week. I am guessing partly because they are not sure if I will have to have a c-section they are holding off the talk as long as possible. It was brought up in my last appointment but we have another u/s on the 8th and should know more then. If I were you, I would check the hospital's website for pre-registration forms or call the hospital. For pre-reg the information they really need is your contact info, insurance info and emergency info. From what I understand, your doc will send over a copy of your chart with medical history and orders. I would also make sure that your delivery partner is fully aware of your wishes and any concerns you have so that they can be your voice if you can't be. OH... and my high risk OB assured me the hospital would be made aware of my diabetes (gestional but they think I have undiagnosed type 2) and that me and the baby would be taken care of.

I would go ahead and register online. It doesn't cost anything, and it made me feel better to be that much more prepared.

Thank you all for your input. I called the Labor and Delivery Department at the hospital where I plan to deliver and to no shock they were baffled/concerned to why I wasn't pre-registered months ago. I had originally planned to register on the 11th, since I have a Maternity Ward Tour that day, but because babies are so unpredictable, I ended up in Labor and Delivery today for observation after a non-reactive NST and getting registered...ironic or what?!?! All is well now and I do feel a little bit more at ease knowing that the baby is ok and that I am registered. They had suggested I register in person, because of my previous health condition, but as well they offer online registration. The only thing that upsets me, is that instead of getting photocopies of the information they now have, I have to request a copy of my medical records from my doctor if I am concerned about delivering at another hospital, even with todays episode of having contractions without feeling them and the baby's heart rate dropping, I'm a little ticked off and stressed that i can't even get a photocopy of my Registration Papers, has anyone else gone/ or is going through anything similar? The L/D nurse told me I could also pre-register at the hospital I am closer to, but to me that seems a little confusing, does that even make sense to register at a hospital you are not being seen at?? I have a doctor's appointment and another NST on Tuesday, so fingers are crossed that we will remain in tact until then, I plan to be very vocal and bring reinforcement a.k.a. the mother ;) on this day. Once again, thank you all for your comments and advice, this has been a very emotional and scary time for me, as this is my first pregnancy and with so much going on, your mind is never really at ease. My experience is a little jaded because I feel so impersonal with the staff at my ob clinic who has been monitoring me so closely for months yet it feels like everyone is a stranger and could care less. For the first time today in L/D, I received excellent and personal and real advice from a doctor and a nurse about their deliveries and opinions on my situation...something I believe all women should naturally receive, especially if this is your first pregnancy and you have a pre-existing or even new, or even completely "healthy" pregnancy...we're pregnant..we need attention too lol. I will keep you informed on any updates, I wish you all a safe and happy August, (or even July or September) Delivery, we never know when they'll decide to come into the world!

I agree with you on the bringing reinforcements with you! I was admitted into the hospital for observation when I was suffering from migraines & a very high blood pressure at 28 weeks, the staff was wonderful and took good care of me there. My doctor was out of town so at my next appointment, my mom was there with questions and harsh looks to show she was not playing around! I am doing well, we are at the 34 weeks mark and counting down to the day I get to see my little princess!
