When did you introduce your baby to rice cereal? My daughter's pediatrician wants her to start when she turns 4 months(which she will be in 10 days) but I'm nervous because I think that is kinda early. Anyone have any opinions or information on introducing rice cereal? I work from home so I'm with my daughter 24/7. How will this effect my milk supply? Sorry if these questions sound dumb...I'm a first time mom.

My pediatrician suggests starting at 4-6mos. I personally think I am going to wait until closer to 6mos for my son. From what I've heard from other moms that when you start solids your milk supply may decrease some. But I think it just varies from person to person.

I started Duane at 4 1/2 months. I used organic rice cerial only because Brown rice is better than white rice and organic was the only one with brown rice. I also put it in a small food processer and hit the pulse button a few times so it was not so chunky for the first few weeks.

Organic is the best way to go. I still try and feed all organic stuff to my kids. I used oatmeal not rice because there was more fiber, just a personal choice. I started a little later because I was exclusively breast fed. I started at 6 months. I would say to take your doctors advice and use your child as a guide. If you feel like it's too early, wait a few weeks and try again. Tammy

With my first I started at 4 months, with my second 5 months, but with the new AAP guidelines recomending exclusively breastfeeding until six months I think I'll wait till then with this one. Do what feels right to you, of you feel it's too early then don't rush it. Also when you do start, nurse first then offer a little cereal. It won't affect your supply as much and they get the most essential nutrients first.

We started our first son at 4 months. He was very big for his age (9lbs 9oz at birth and steady growing) and was holding his head up far earlier than normal. So he did fine. Our second son we didn't start until 6 or 7 months, indrucing with cereal and creamed (in breastmilk) bananas, sweet potates, peas, etc. In the very beginning it's not even 'eating' solids, it's more like practice tastes. Besides age, your baby has to be able to support her head completely and sit supported and the tounge can't constantly be pushing/suckling, that must subside. It's a general guideline. anywhere from 4 months, at the EARLIEST, to 8 months on the later end, is normal. It depends on how hungry your kiddo is too. If she's not getting enough food, that's a different story. Wait a while, it will be fine, and good, for her to have your breastmilk. And as someone mentioned, your supply may decrease a little once you introduce and more steadily rely on solids.

We started at 4 months, but fairly intermittently. We more started it as a way to appease DD as she was always upset she couldn't eat big people food at dinner time, which is why we started her when we did.

With my older girls (DD now 16, 10, and 9) I gave them oatmeal at about 4 months with my breast milk. My next girl (DD now 8) was smaller and she was pretty much stuck straight to my boob until 5 or 6 months (she was smaller and I was...emotional). I think around that time I started giving her rice and oatmeal in my breast milk. My DS (now 7) I started giving him oatmeal in my milk around 3 months. He was bigger and hungrier. My youngest (DD now 5) didn't get anything in my milk until about 5 months. I say listen to the babe. If they're wanting more food, then start adding oatmeal or rice cereal to your milk. As far as milk supply, my supply started to adjust once I wasn't pumping or nursing as much.
