I am funny about cribs, they always seemed more of a hassle to me than anything else. My first one slept in a crib until she could crawl out and that was before she could walk.
Then we did a twin with guard rails on both sides. The kind of guard rail with the netting. No pillows or big blankets, just a small blanket and warm PJ's. That ended up working so well that I never used the crib for the two children that followed ( I am not recommending this, just sharing what worked for us)
It worked well because I never had to transition them to a different bed. My girls didn't need guard rails after the age of two but my son used them until he was five. He just seemed to move around a lot more and he fell out of bed often so he got to keep the rails for longer.
I will also say that I have friends that have kept their child in a crib as long as possible. One of them still has her daughter in a crib at three and that is with all sides and lowest setting for mattress.
Hope that helps you out. Let us know what you decide.
