Things no one told you about labor- but should have
1 year ago  ::  Mar 25, 2011 - 9:19AM #1

For those who have had babies before- please offer any advice for us first time moms- what are some things you wish you'd been told prior to going into labor? And about the first few days with your new baby?

Hi I'm Mommy to my baby Jr hes 1 now. Advice for labor um... i didn't take any birth classes but i did a lot of research. labor was everything i thought it would be while your in it it flys by fast to me it seemed like i was there for 4hrs and i was really there for 9. One thing is theres a few types of labor pain some women feel it all down there others in your back and choulders (thats the worse kind) thats what I had. I went in hoping to give birth naturally but was open to if i needed the epidural i would use it. I made it to about 6" dialated without but YES i needed it after that. the pain was unbelievable it felt like  my back and shoulder bones were breaking from the inside out. but after the epidural i was good felt pressure but not like befor at all! As soon as the numbness went away I was already walking aroun I was suprised at that. I would invest in a snuggie that saved me my 1st month of being a mom my son loved it. And when the baby spits up alot you might think hes threw up but hes not just spit  up. Heres a big one sleep when he sleeps i know you might want to run around and get stuff done but you have to take care of your self too giving birth is a huge thing on your body. and don't worry so much on the pain cuz no matter how muh you stress about it its going to happen any ways thats my phlosphy. and all that work pays off and all that pain gos away after you see the baby. Good Luck ladies!

Hi there-mommy to a 2.5 year old (7/14/08) and now due for #2 in June. Congrats! I have no advice for labor- never happened for me, lol and she was breech so we had a scheduled c-section.

I can tell you that the nose suction thing they have in the hospital is yours to take home & DO NOT LOSE IT!!!! That thing is the BEST one you will ever come across- all the ones I've tried from the stores do not work at all. So whatever you do, keep it somewhere at home where it has a designated place and do not leave it out where a dog or cat could find it & think it's a chew toy. B/C you can't buy them or find them anywhere, unless you have a friend that works at the hospital and can snag you one, lol.

You will lose LOTS of sleep, but will be so happy that you won't care! Falling asleep with a baby on your chest is heavenly and so easy to do; just make sure someone else is home to watch you & make sure you don't drop the baby or roll over. I never did, but the nurses at the hospital freak when you do it there- we were told it was a "no no." Probably b/c they would be liable, but better safe than sorry I guess.

The first few days afterwards you may not have an appetite, but it is important to eat healthy meals & get rest when you can. Dishes & laundry will not get done, meals won't be cooked, and your house will be a mess- unless you have family and/or a man that is going to step up and help out.

This is my second baby and with the first it really helped me so I highly recommend the book What to Expect the First Year. You will have all sorts of Q's and this book gives you details about what the baby should be or may be doing each month and plenty of other great tips and advice. I loved being able to just look up things in the back on a whim.

Also if you plan on letting the baby soothe themselves to sleep this worked for us. After he was in his crib we gave our son 20 minutes - he would start to cry and we would wait 20 minutes before going to get him and nearly everytime he would be asleep by the time we made it to the 20min mark.

you may loose your mucus plug a few weeks before the big day

When your water breaks it doesn't stop.. I got a first gush then it kept slowly comming so bring a towel for your way to the hospital.

if you have to put your baby in the crib and go in a quiet room for a few minutes do it.. no baby ever got hurt from crying

Sleep when your baby sleeps for the first couple of weeks!  You will be so glad that you did!  The chores at home can wait and will wait for you to be ready to do them.

If you get stressed or frustrated, lay your baby down and walk away so that you can regroup!  Crying wont hurt your little bundle of joy plus it encourages self-soothing which will be helpful to everyone down the road!

Expect the unexpected sometimes.  My dh and I took the labor classes and read all the books.  I went into labor the day after my due date and was in labor for 23 hours before I spiked a fever, baby showed distress and I couldn't get past a 6.  Hello emergency c-section.  At the time I couldn't believe it.  I had prepared for labor and it was supposed to go as planned but remember that baby is in charge!  What mattered in the end was a healthy baby and Mama regardless of how he entered the world.  I totally agree with getting the book "What to Expect the First Year".  I referred to it so much.  Accept help when you can.  That was hard for me to do with my first baby because I wanted to be the strong, new Mom that could do it all but with baby #2 I took help whenever I could get it!  Expect to be tired but know that one day you will sleep again and baby will not be sleeping in small incriments forever. :)

I had my daughter in November, and ended up having a cesarean after 40-hours of non-productive labor (pitocin, etc).

One thing to know is that you kind of get stopped up.  Everything is so confused in your abdomen after having a baby, and your hormones... It took me about a month (or more) to get back to "normal" bathroom wise, although if you remember to take the meds they prescribe (colace), it probably won't take as long.

Remember to breathe during contractions!  The feeling is hard to explain, but the automatic reaction is to hold your breath and tense up.  Don't!  Try and relax, and breathe!

Also, after you get home with baby, try and take the time to relax, heal, and bond with your baby.  I didn't, and was up trying to clean and such too soon, and I physically and emotionally regretted it.

Good luck, girls!  And congrats!
