Nasal Congestion, Sore Throat and Sinus Pressure :(

For the past week I had the most horrible nasal congestion, sore throat and sinus pressure I have ever experienced. I tried the neti pot, humdifier, cough drops, Vicks vapor rub, vaporizer, but nothing seemed to calm down the cough, congestion or sinus pressure. I called the doctor and he said to take Sudafed and Robitussin DM...I was kind of hesitant to take medication while 22 weeks pregnant but I did not want the symptoms to get worse. Has anyone else been sick and had to take medication while pregnant?

I have used Sudafed in the past.  From what I have been reading, you don't want to take either of those during the first trimester but they are fine to take once you are past those first 12 weeks.  However, you need to make sure that the ones that you take are not the SA (sustained action) or "multi symptom" forms of the drugs.  Also, I have had congestion myself quite a bit in this pregnancy and have found just regular saline to help clear things up.  Gargling warm salt water can help with the sore throat, and curling up with a steamy cup of water laced with lemon juice and honey to sip is good too.  For sinus pressure, try a warm, damp washcloth lain across your sinus area.  Good luck, I hope that you feel better!

Yes, I was very sick during Christmas break and took a lot of Tylenol Cold & Sinus. If it is on the approved list (which my doc gave me a copy of) then there is no reason it is not safe to take. Just read the dosage and timing carefully. I understand not wanting to over-medicate or take anything unessecary. I only took it when I was absolutely miserable or couldn't sleep. Other than that I relied on lots of tissue, fluids, Vick's VaporRub, non-medicated non-sugar throat lozenges, and a humidfier next to my bed.
