What Works for You?

I'm wondering what works for you when it comes to getting your kids to do their home work?

We are trying to get into a good routine when it comes to home work around our house. The problem is that I can't seem to find the magic answer.

I started off letting the kids have a half hour to unwind and get a snack before home work time but that quickly turned into a nightmare!

Help me out, what works for you when it comes to getting the kids to do their homework?

Great question.  I have the same problem.  I've recently tried letting them play outside fo a while to burn off energy before starting homework but boy has that backfired!  It's very hard to get them back inside and settled and focused after that.  I've decided they have got to start doing it right when they get home from school.  Have a snack at the table and then immediately start work.  Either way, they gripe though lol

I think we finally found something that works. The kids come in, throw down their back packs and have a seat at our counter. I feed them, they chat about their day and then start homework.

I used to let them run around for a half hour but like you said, it backfires:)

I have found that allowing them a couple hours to unwind immediately after school makes it easier to get them to focus on homework in the evening.  I do insist though on physical activities after school, not the computer or TV.  I created an individual agreement with incentives and then had them sign/agree.  It works well and makes everyone happy.

Bananie,

Very smart! I got so tired of my son asking for the computer or wii that I made a rule "no computer or wii on school days"
