The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says this about hand washing:
Wet your hands with clean warm running water and apply soap. Rub hands together to make a lather and scrub all surfaces. Continue rubbing hands for 20 seconds. Rinse hands well under running water. Dry your hands completely (germs thrive on wet hands). Is that how your family does it? Any tricks, shortcuts, sneaky advice on how to a) get kids to wash hands or b) do it better? My daughter signs the abc's while she washes her hands. She learned to do that in school. I'm still looking for a way to get my son to wash his hands without sounding like I'm nagging him.

On Nick Jr. they have that song that goes "Tops and bottoms, tops and bottoms, inbetween, inbetween, rub them both together, rub them both together, you're all clean, squeaky clean" so that's our method for the kids. I know at school they say the ABC's during handwashing but the song on Nick Jr. reminds them to clean more thoroughly IMO.

Rub your hands vigorously for at least 20 seconds. Remember to scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.

best trick i ever learned: sing Happy Birthday while your sudsing your hands--it's almost exactly the 20 seconds you need to get them throughly clean. :) and it's fun to sing Happy Birthday even when it's not your birthday!

I used to have trouble getting my 6 year old to wash his hands. Now we have a new baby sister in the house and no one is allowed to touch her without washing their hands. Now it's become a race between my 6 year old and his 2 year old brother to see who can get to the bathroom first to wash so they can be the first to play with her.
