2 years ago  ::  Mar 06, 2011 - 2:29AM #1

At what age would you (did you) let your child play sports? Do you think most kids' sports are too intense?

Update: Get your kiddos ready for spring outside play and sports with our Spring Safety Checkup.

I have a 3yr old boy. He will be 4 in May. I just signed him up for T-ball. He is so excited. I also have a 9yr old who has  been playing baseball and football for alittle while now. Of course little one has to do what his big brother does. Besides its reat exercise for them.

I have a 3 year old boy who loves sports, Our YMCA has a 3-5 year old T-ball program that we signed up for. And it was inexpensive, and it is only onsaturdays for games. And the best part he gets for us is he gets to socialize and so do we. And his favorite part is he gets a team hat and shirt!

Logan started with soccer at 5 yrs. old.  Nobody kept score, which was great.  Practices were twice a week, and games were on the weekends.  I thought at that age they could have gotten by with just one practice/ week, but we got through it, and he had a blast.  However, in kindergarten, he begged us to play football.  We were hesitant, but caved in.  What a mistake. (For us, anyways.  Some kids and parents might not have minded it.) Practice was 4 nights/week for 2 hours each night, and games on Sunday.  They NEVER cancelled a practice if it rained, unless we were getting a hurricane or something. It was like they were in the freakin' NFL.  Logan ended up not liking it as much as he thought he would, and volunteered to sit the pine alot!  HA.  Like jessica said, the YMCA is awesome if you don't want to invest a ton of time and money, and also if you don't like working the concession stand and doing fund raisers!  He did indoor soccer there, and absolutely loved it.  I guess you just have to know when you're going into something how much time and dedication it's going to involve, how your kids will handle it,  and go from there.

My little guy who is 3 is going to start a toddler tball league this year. He's really excited and wanted to play sooo bad last summer when we'd watch his cousins play. I don't plan on getting serious about it (making him practice for hours in the back yard or anything like that) - we will just play when he feels like it and show up to games. My nephews are 8 & 9 and in basketball - it's getting pretty ridiculous already. At that age the sport shouldn't take up more than 2 days a week (in my opinion).
