Im sick with a sore throat, any advice?

I am sick with a sore throat , and I don't want to get Gianna sick, so far we have been doing good she is 4 months old and has not gotten sick. I feel really sick it hurts when I swallow. I called for medical advise as to what I could take, and they said nothing... they want me to go in first to see if it's an infection, well I can't afford it right now, so that is not an option.

I do have to breastfeed and care for her What do I do? I wash my hands, I am not kissing my baby . . Does anybody have any advise as to what I could take for the sore throat, or what to do to make this go away sooner, and how to care for my LO?

Please help, I am scared of getting her sick...

Have you ever used oil of oregano?  It's comes in a small bottle but is very potent. You buy it at the health food store and you just put ONE drop under your tongue and drink some water or juice. This makes it go down your throat but watch how much you take because it's very strong . If you use a couple of times a day it works great.  within the same day or next, my sore throat is gone.  I learnt this from my mom for any sore throat and it works every time. It's also safe to use while breast feeding because it's natural.

I think that everyone has given really good advice so far but trust me on this, if she is going to get sick, she will. I am not saying that to scare you or discourage you not to make any efforts for her to not get sick because you should make all the effort you can. I say it because she will eventually get sick. Keylee kept sicking right after she was born but it was because of her brother. He kept getting sick.

Make sure you are taking your vitamins and she is taking hers and maybe to help prevent you from breathing on her accidently you can get those surgical masks they sell them at walgreens and the grocery stores.... at least at the publix by me they do. remember to change your tooth brush and sheets once you are better.

I was recently sick, maybe 2 weeks ago?? can't quite remember lol. I was extremely worried Benjamin would get sick. I did everything possible to prevent it, handwashing, resting as much as I could and not smooching all over him. Well, despite my efforts he did get sick. It wasn't as bad as I had it, but he started a small cold and coughing. Was sad but he recovered quite well. I hope you get well soon! It is hard to be sick and take care of a baby!

i was also recently sick a couple of weeks ago with a sore throat and runny nose.  My son did not get sick at all, I was pretty impressed.  i just stopped kissing him during this time.  They have very strong immune systems from us especially if we're breastfeeding as I am.  I was so happy that he didn't catch anything.  good luck and don't worry.

Thanks everyone. I am feeling worse, the Tsunami scare from yesterday didn't help because I didn't get but 2 hours sleep, and today I have a headache, a little bit of a cough and phlegm and I am really tired.

Yesterday when I  called the nurse said not to take honey not sure why... but you say it's ok?

Gianna is still doing ok, I think, she seems to pick up on me being sick, its weird, she looks at me different... I'm really trying not to stress about her getting sick, but I can't help but worry, like if she doesn't wanna eat I think she can't swallow... I don't know I guess I am just afraid of not knowing if she is hurting, I love her so much, I wish she didn't have to get sick... :) I am such a first time mommy, I know. Thanks guys it helps to hear your advise.

About the honey comment- I know babies under a year (maybe longer? I can't remember) aren't suppose to have honey because it's a high allergy food. Maybe it can go to your milk and she'll get it?? And they don't want her exposed to it and possibly have a reaction. That would be my guess why she said no honey.

Hot tea can help tho. I usually put honey in mine, but lemon (I think another poster suggested this) would probably help sooth as well.

Do you live where the tsunami hit??

Still sick, I went to the pharmacy and they told me not to take anything just vitamin C, which you guys had told me. I am doing the gargling with salt water I just didn't know how often. I was hoping I could take echinacia because it really works for me, but I asked the pharmacist too, and she said no. Well, you guys got it right.

Gianna is sleeping a lot, has not gotten sick, I am just wondering though why is she sleeping so much?

@Shorty4ever, yes, I am from Santa Cruz Ca, just recently moved inland to San Jose(25 min away), but my family is still in Santa Cruz, so I had them ALL come to my 1 bedroom apartment. I am glad we are ok, only the Harbor was affected. My prayers are with the people from Japan, it's so hard to watch.
