My 5 month old has finally developed her first cold and it is freaking me out! She has a cough that to me sounds horrible coming out of someone so small. She wheezes and is having trouble breathing through her nose. The doctors said they cant give her anything to help because shes so small, that we just have to wait it out. She has no fever and is still eating so they said i shouldnt worry. The only thing they advised me to do was use a humidifier, keep her head elevated while she sleeps and call if she gets worse. Now being the overprotective mommy that i am (lol), i am still worried about her. Is there any home remedies that i can use to help her get through this? She just seems so irritable and on top of it all.. she's teething! UGH!!!

Well, with the teething and a cold, watch for ear infections. For my boys, especially when the oldest was little, I bought the pediacare vapor plug-ins and plug those in the room at night and the main room during the day and it helped them breathe. I also bought the vapor bath and made sure they had a nice warm bath or shower to help clear them, even if I just turned on the shower really hot and sat in the bathroom to let the steam help break down the mucous, sometimes 2-3 times/day. I also bought the baby vapor rub from Vick's and would put that on their chest, back, and feet (someone told me the feet works really well, so I figure it wouldn't hurt). All those combinations seemed to help my boys feel better. I hope she feels better soon.

We have already survived RSV, which was really scary for us. We figure she caught it at daycare, because thats really the only other place she goes other than her grandparents house. So for quite awhile we were using the humidafer, and the pedisure plugins. I am so glad I got the plug ins and had the humidifer. Our doctor suggested either a cool mist or a heated humidifer, although I have heard some doctors steer you towards the cool mist. Other than we just used saline in her nose and suctioned and suctioned her nose out. Hope your little one feels better soon and I hope this helps.

Thanks ladies! UPDATE: Took her into the pediatrician yesterday because she woke up very congested and making a non-stop wheezing sound. They tested for RSV and whooping cough but we wont know the results until tomorrow. She ended up getting a breathing treatment that stopped the wheezing and cleared her up temporarily. She was also prescibed an inhaler and some kind of saline drops to put in her nose to make it easier to suck out the boogs. She's still pretty fussy when she has a coughing spell and gets mad when she wants to eat but cant because it triggers her cough. But, i've figured out that if i suction and give her the inhaler right before a feeding she does ok. I just hope this thing passes rather quickly! She normally sleeps through the night and now shes up fussing everytime she coughs or feels herself snorting. The lack of sleep and her being sick is causing me to get sick too! (Booo!) I need to stay well enough to take care of her.. I know ill be ok, Im just praying for my Baby!! Thanks again, ladies!
