eye infection?
2 years ago  ::  Jun 20, 2011 - 3:50PM #1

Ok, so my doctor keeps tellin me that my daughter's eye is just stopped up and to keep massaging it with a warm towel, that it should eventually go away. She has had green and yellow goo coming out of her right eye pretty much since she was born and is almost 7 months old now. i massage it atleast 3 to 4 times a day and when i give her a bath every night and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. Should i get a second opinion? Does any one else have this problem?

Yes, get a second opinion. This does happen, however, if it doesn't go away on it's own, something needs to be done to correct it. Two of my children had it as infants and in both cases it went away on it's own.

My son also had blocked tear ducts as an infant.. It took awhile for it to go away but you should definately get a second opinion. Some babies require surgery to unblock the tear duct.

I would definitely get a 2nd opinion. My daughter (now 7 mos) had the same issues with clogged tear ducts when she was a month or 2 old. It was both of her eyes. She'd wake up with them almost matted shut. I did the same thing-massaged, used warm cloths, etc.-and it eventually went away. It took several weeks. However, my little cousin had terrible problems with clogged tear ducts and eventually had to have a surgical procedure to take care of it...Not exactly sure what they did (it's been years ago). But yeah, if you have any doubts, def. talk to another doc, maybe a pediatric ophthalmologist, b/c seems like this has been going on for way too long. Good luck!!!

My son had a blocked tear duct as well, and I massaged it but I don't think that helped too much.  It seemed to unclog on its own when he was about 5 months old.  However, my pediatrician initially told me (when my son was a newborn) that if the clogged duct didn't clear up by 9-12 months then I would need to take him to an eye doctor.  I hope everything works out for you and your little one!
