Baby food recipes
3 years ago  ::  Jun 24, 2010 - 4:51PM #1

Ok, I posted this on facebook, but I wondered if you all had any other ideas.  I get a TON of baby food through WIC,  I'm talking 65 jars of fruits and veggies and 32 jars of meats EACH MONTH.  Vic never ate that much of it anyway and is starting to refuse it altogether now as he wants real food.  SO, my question is, you all have any suggestions on stuff to add it in with regular food?  Like using the bananas to make banana bread or adding the turkey in with turkey gravy or something like that?  I still have 3 more months of baby food coming to me too!  I would just not get it, but if you don't use them then it looks like the program doesn't need as much money and it looks bad for the program.

Hey Heidi,

I posted this on facebook, but I started adding a little bit of spice to Gavin's baby food and he was all about eating it. I use pumpkin pie spice in the fruits and the meats and meat combos and then occasionally use just plain cinnamon in the fruits. He LOVES it. I'm still trying to think of what to add to the veggies to make then taste better.

I also responded to you on facebook but I'm adding this for everyone elses benefit, lol.  I started adding cinnamin to his frutis and cereal and pepper and garlic to meats and sometimes veggeis too and he loved it for awhile! then he started just crying when the spoon would get close to him and grab it so I'd use the backup spoon and he'd grab that one too and refuse to open his mouth until it was real food or something he could feed himself.  So today we had mashed potatos and chicken nuggets for lunch, lol.  He did great with it though and loved every bite!

Does he not want to be spoon fed at all or is he just looking for the texture of real food?  If he lets you feed him with the spoon you could use the meat and steam/chop carrots and green beans and add cut up pieces of pasta.  If he wont let you use the spoon you could soak the cheerios in the fruit and let him eat it that way.  I also let Emily use the spoon herself.  It was a total mess but she ate way more than when I would try to feed her.  On Wholesomebabyfood.com they have lots of recipes that you could use the babyfood in ( like teething biscuts and stuff)  Since he liked the mashed potatos you could stir in some of the jared food too.

Worst case scenario would be to donate them to a food bank. I posted on FB about that book by Jerry Seinfeld's wife. I don't know what the name of it is but there is a woman that writes "Sneaky Chef" books. Her website is www.thesneakychef.com You might be able to get some recipes from there. BTW- my SIL gave us some "self feeder" spoons that might help with the messiness. Fi doesn't care much about them yet so I can't tell you how well they work but it's something to keep in mind!
