Cold :(

Emma has developed a yucky cold from a little boy who kissed her forehead! Man was I mad when the grandmother, a friend of my family, asked him to kiss her after she informed us he had a nasty cold!

ANYWAY...my poor peanut has this awful cough that keeps me up at night not knowing if she's ok. I called her pediatrician and they told me not to give her medicine, to just let it run it's course and give her 1/2 tsp of corn syrup. Has anyone dealt with a cold yet and what did you give your little one?

just a little acetemetaphine, and you can get some drops for their noses. they are just saline drops that will help clear things out a bit and help her nose from drying out. not much you can do, just be patient and make time for lots of cuddling.

have you also tried proping her head up with a pillow under the crib sheet?  My son had a nasty cold last week and his doc said to do that along with baby ibprof., saline drops, and baby cold med.  We also added the rub on his chest, neck, and behind his ears at bed time.  We have  a humidifier running in his room at all times to help with daily dryness  in our home.  Mainly you just have to wait it out after all of that, but they all get better and when they do it is wonderful to see their smiles and hear their laughs again.

The best thing for a cold, since you can't give any otc meds is humidifier in the room, prop them while sleeping with a boppy or put some books under the mattress so they are elevated, use the nasal asperator OFTEN!!! go in the nostral at different angles so you are sure to get a lot of snot - if congestion continues use saline drops - they HATE this but it works really well to open up congested nasal pasages!! also my number one tip for a cold with COUGH is VICKS VAPOR RUB ON THE FEET! i swear by this - if  my lils get colds with a cough that keeps them up i just put a good layer of vicks on their feet, put socks on and no cough for at least 2-3 hours sometimes longer, depending on how persistant the cough is. my kids have allergies so i know how bad it sucks when they are snotty but it's pretty much an everyday thing for us.

can i ask - what does the corn syrup do? i have never heard of this?

Unfortunately, there is not much you can do, but what others have already suggested: nasal drops, cool-mist humidifier/steam baths, prop head when sleeping, acetominophen/ibuprofen, and lots of LOVE ; )  It will run its course, but might take up to 2 weeks.  Hang in there!

Thanks Ladies! It's week number 2 and the cough seems to be much better and her nose is much less congested. Thank goodness...I can't stand it when she's sick. I wish we could be sick for them!

amanda1361- The pediatrician said not to give her otc meds because she's too young but I could give her corn syrup to coat her throat so she wouldn't cough as much!

Savannah just had her first cold a week ago and it was rough. The biggest thing was the runny nose. Oh how I longed to be able to say "Blow" lol! I used a humidifer and an aspirator everyday all day. No real meds except the Tylenol fever reduced if and only if she had a fever.  She really just wanted to be held. She slept on the boppy to be elevated as well.  I went on webmd and they had a lot of good things to try. They even said you can give a camomille tea. I didnt try it but towards the end I would have done anything. LOL! Good Luck! Hope baby feels better soon :-)
