I didn't paint any of my furniture, but I believe there's paint made specifically for that. I'm sure you could google it and find out. Good luck! :-)

most paints today are very low fumes. Do it outside on a nice day and you will be totally fine, or inside with a fan or two going and open the windows. I would do it. I painted most of my house pregnant.

I worked in the Home Depot paint department for 2 years... and this is what I learned.  Oil based paint - which is nearly impossible to find now - is a no no for you as the fumes and the VOC levels (volitile organic compounds - basically the stuff that gives paint odor and eats at the ozone) are too high and could be harmful to you and/or baby.  That goes for oil based primers as well.  If your furniture needs primer get water/latex based or have someone else prime it for you.  Water/latex based paints have differening VOC levels depending on the brand.  Home Depot's Behr paint has very low VOC levels - especially their paint and primer in one.  There are also some eco brands out there like Freshaire which have no VOCs but are a little more expensive.

Like someone else said before - if you plan to paint it yourself do it outside if possible, if not make sure you have plenty of ventiliation, open windows and fans so you don't have issues.  If the smell gets too much, if you get dizzy or light headed take a breather and perhaps find someone else to continue the project.
