Having a son with a healthy curiosity for firetrucks, dump trucks, buses and all other heavy machinery out there, causes me to keep an extra eye out for toddler apps featuring vehicles of any kind.
Kids Vehicles by Polish Jokes Entertainment have figured out there are several parents that share my condition and therefore it would be a great idea to make an all-boys-app just filled with beautiful vehicles flashing their lights and making their sounds. The child can click on the vehicle to activate hidden functions like siren and lights, opening the vehicle door, lifting the truck bed etc. Sliding the vehicle to the right or clicking on the white sign will bring in the the next vehicle. There are total of 9 vehicles for the toddler to enjoy.
Indeed, Kids Vehicles is one of the best toddler apps regarding vehicles graphics and details, however, there are several shortcomings in the “usability department” which caused this app to loose points in this review. Here is what the kids experienced:
What happened when the kids used it? As expected, the girls didn’t care much about this app. HOWEVER, the boys had a blast. Clicking on the dump truck to lift its bed, sounding off the ambulance sirens, opening the school bus door and activating the vehicles wipers. Fun fun fun.
However, there was a usability limitation because the touch areas are limited or not sensitive enough, causing frustrations for the kids, causing them to ask for parental help. Accidental clicking on the big yellow “back to the menu” button were also registered, causing further frustration by surprised toddlers.
Leveraging the full impact of the iPad screen, Kids Vehicles displays a rare quality of graphics compared to other toddler apps. The app activity is very focused and would amuse kids younger than 4 year old since it has no gaming activity inside besides the cause and effect, clicking on the vehicle parts.
In the future version, it would be great to see further hot spots on each vehicle granting more action to a child using this app. Increasing the hot spot sensitivity would also be a major improvement.
