So I have started to deplete my freezer stash...I am only pumping 4oz at work 3x a day but my little man is eating 5oz. He must be getting 5oz on the weekends because he is stasfied as I only BF him when I am not working. I really don't want to sub formula so I spoke with my lac consult an she had me get "blessed thistle" and "fenugreek". Has anyone used these supplements before? If so did it work and how did you like it. How long did you use it for?

I haven't used either one. I have heard the funugreek makes you smell like maple syrup. I guess that might not be terrible, but it depends how sickeningly sweet it is. I'd be interested to know how it works. I have been back at work 4 days/week since the beginning of the month, and I go back full time next week. I had started to build up my freezer stash because my husband gives her formula on the days that he has her, but that will be cut down to 1 day/week. I know everyone has their preferences, but we've had good luck with Gerber Good Start. It's not my first preference, but we're trying to make the breast milk last as long as we can so that's our compromise. Also, I've noticed that on a "good" day, I'm only getting 8 ounces at work. Days like today, I didn't even get 4 so I'm concerned that it's drying up. However, like you, I only nurse when I'm home with her, and she seems to be getting enough so I don't quite get it. Also, day care told me today that they don't think 4-ounce bottles are enough. I don't know what to tell them because I'm not really willing to give them more milk, and my husband only feeds her 4 ounces. I really don't think the formula (particularly that brand) is THAT much more filling than breast milk. Let me know if you see results with the supplements.

I've used them both together and they worked wonderfully for me. One of them makes your sweat and urine smell like syrup but besides that there were no other problems for me. My milk supply increased a lot

momof4girls- I have the same problem with my MIL. She always thinks blake needs more than 5oz cause he sucks the bottle down. But when I feed him bottles he is always satisfied when he is thru. I've picked him up sometimes and she has fed him almost twice as much as I do ( i send extra in case of emergency since he only gets breast milk) and then he has a belly ache all night!! I've tried every nice way to tell her to quit it but havent gotten thru to her.

parkinsk2, yes, we already had this battle once at day care. My mother-in-law kept her for a few weeks when I first started back to work part-time because she was visiting with us. She consistently gave her 3-4 ounces, and she was fine. I told them that when she started day care. It was a matter of days before they started giving her 5-6 ounces. They were giving her 20 ounces a day!!! Suddenly, when I was picking her up, she'd be through 2 sets of clothes. I tried many, many times to tell them that she didn't eat that much at home, but they simply didn't listen. She was spitting up constantly, to the point that one day they made me come get her because she kept spitting up, and therefore, she MUST be sick. That was the breaking point for me. When I took her back 2 days later, I told them that she was only to get 4 ounces every 3 hours. When she finishes, they need to wait 10-15 more minutes before they give her any more, and then only an ounce at a time. That is how often she eats at home, and that's all my husband ever gives her when he keeps her, which is usually 2 days per week. I can't believe her appetite suddenly increases every single time she's at day care, but it goes back to normal when she's at home. I told them that I clearly don't know how much she eats when I have her, but my husband does. So, fast forward to a month and a half later. She hardly ever spits up, either there or at home. Hmm, could it be that she's not being filled to the point of explosion?? The other day they made me come get her because she had diarrhea. Well, I can tell you that she either had a miraculous recovery, or she was never sick because everything was normal with her once I picked her up. At the same time, they told me that she's not getting enough food. It's apparently a struggle for them to keep her going the 3 hours without eating. "And Jack is just a week older than her, and he's eating 5-6 ounces." Well, good for Jack. It's very odd to me because I usually feed her at 6:30 or so in the morning, and when I have her at home, she doesn't eat for 6 hours after that. Funny that you are having trouble keeping her settled for only 1/2 of that time. "She also gulps it down." You think? She doesn't have to work nearly so hard for it. Hence, why I wanted them to wait 10-15 more minutes before offering her more. She doesn't realize she's full. As you can see, I am just a little frustrated with the whole situation. So, my solution is this: I only take the amount of milk that I think she needs in 1 day. I am certain that she is not starving. And if it's not there, then they have to follow my instructions. I'm sure it is only a very little matter of time before she starts eating other things and this will be a non-issue anyhow.

momof4girls- WOW is all I can say lol. I feel lucky I have an awesome daycare. In the beginning you have to fill out a sheet on what you want your baby to eat and have it signed by the babies doctor. After that you have to sign the sheet that they keep on file every time you change what he should get. Everyday we get a sheet with what time they feed him, how much, how he acted, when he slept, when he went to bathroom etc. However my MIL would do same thing and feed all the bottles that I brought over, just because he would cry she thought he needed to be fed. Agrevating!!! I only sent extra in case we couldn't get back in enough time. I hope when I am a MIL I will not be like that LOL! People just do what they want to do and don't care what you ask them to do. I started pills but nothing yet so I will keep you updated...I had started my freezer stash when he was 4wks old because i only had 6wks off. He has never gotten formula yet (hopefully he won't have to). I figured not bad for going 21wks and counting w/o subing formula. Hopefully these supplements will help and I can stress less about it. parkinsk2- how many did you take and for how long? Do I take these the rest of his first year or once I am making more stop?

I've heard very good things about both supplements increasing supply. Good luck with them. Wow Christine! I think if I were you I would try to find another daycare center. It's ridiculous that they're feeding her that much. Poor little girl.

momma31- I took 2 capsules of each one three times a day. The bottle and the breast feeding book I have said you could take up to 3 caps 3 times a day. I took them for about 2 weeks and then stopped for a few weeks and then did 2 more weeks and stopped. This was during the first couple months because I had to supplement with formula in the hospital because he had severe jaundice and he was so big. He had to have his system flushed and I wasn't making enough milk for him to do that. So when we got home I started the capsules so I could ween out the formula. Momof4- I know exactly how you feel. My MIL is keeping him today and I told her that he was on a good schedule and told her to only feed him every 4hrs so we will see how that goes lol

Our dilemma is that other than the feeding issue, they've been really good. Particularly since up until now, we have only needed part-time care, and no other day care was willing to take her part time. Well, maybe I should re-phrase -- they'd take her part time, but we would have still had to pay for full time. Anyone know how quickly you'd see results with the fenugreek? I'm thinking of giving it a try. I can tell I'm not making near as much, but I'm not sure why since I have been pumping every day ay work.

I've heard about those too supplements as well, and heard they worked good. I would also just make sure you drink lots and lots and lots of water! It should help. One more thing, when you pump, maybe pump an extra 5 minutes or so. Sometimes you get a 2nd letdown and can get a big more out. And yes, the baby does usually pull more out than your pump does!
