I have a friend with a son who is 19months old. Her pedicatrician recommended speech therapy as her son only says a couple of words. Tyler (my son) is just now 18 months and says about 5ish. Is this too little? His check up is monday and I am feeling anxious. I really do not think if its recommended that I will persue it until he is closer to 2 and not talking much more. He understands and listens well ex, i can tell him to bring me his sippy or ask if he is thirsty and he will go find it. and he babbles like crazy besides his handful of clear words.

A friend and I were just talking about this today. Her LO seems to definitely have a speeh delay, and she has finally convinced her pediatrician to give her referrals for hearing tests and speech therapy. I was telling her that I'm keeping a close eye on mine because even though she babbles a lot, and emphatically gestures, she seem to almost be regressing in learning new words instead of progressing. There are words she used to say a lot that she doesn't at all any more, and she doesn't seem very interested in learning new words, though she likes learning new signs. She is a lot less progressed than either of my older kids at this age, which is surprising, but not nessesarily a sign of anything. We are just kind of watchful right now and for the next few months. Meanwhile I'm keeping up with my friends progress on her blog she just started to document their journey. I'm sure she would love input from other moms with these concerns or experiences. Check it out at: toddlerspeechdelay.blogspot.com Hope we all get the answers we need soon!

I, personally, would be hesitant to put too much emphasis on speech therapy at such an early age. I had one who was literally putting sentences together between 15 & 18 months, and one who didn't say more than a handful of words until she was over 2. My oldest and youngest were more on target for "normal", but kids progress differently. I don't panic until a little later.

I would not consider speech therapy at such an early age either. Different kids start speaking at diffferent ages. I'd take a second opinion before putting my kid through this.
