My toddler has been screaming and crying to fall asleep in the night
2 years ago  ::  Sep 25, 2011 - 1:40AM #1
Hello Moms,
My son has always liked sleeping in our bed with us in it. So, now that he is turning 3, he insists that we sleep with him when we put him down for the night, in our bed. No way, he sleeps in our bed. This is difficult without saying because we don't want to lie there in our bed so that he can sleep. I don't find it healthy or necessary to do. But, he is screaming and crying and asking for it! Does he really need us when we spend enough time with him during the daytime? He has his usual fears, but nothing out of the ordinary. Although he is extremely stubborn, has a lot of emotions, feels very sensitive when he does not get his way even with choices. Please help!!

Thanks.

I would put him in his room, in his bed, and lay down with him in his bed. Once he falls asleep you can get up and leave. Do that for a few nights and then try laying him down in his bed and see how that goes. if he still needs you in the room, you could try staying in the room until he falls asleep. You can start off by being close to his bed and every night scoot a little closer to the door.

Just make sure that you don't turn back once you have started, it should only take a few nights, but if you don't follow through it will be way harder than it needs to be.

Hope that helps. Let me know how you are doing and how the transition goes.

Also, remember that there is no wrong way to do things. It's all about what works for you and your family :)
